Apple, Google and Amazon investigated by the Italian Antitrust for their freemium-app models

Apple, Google and Amazon are being investigated by Italian antitrust regulators for their freemium app models in their respective app stores.

Antitrust is trying to determine if each company’s App Stores and freemium apps offer enough information on in-app purchases. In addition, it is also investigating whether these sales practices are based on tricking users into purchasing in-app content. A statement reads:

The freemium app model is undoubtedly one of the best models that developers can use to earn money while maintaining the initial cost of the free app.

The investigation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The maximum fine that the Italian authorities could apply to each company is € 5 million.
