Apple works with Microsoft, Google and other companies to get more transparency from the NSA

Apple is joining forces with Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and several other technology companies and groups to demand greater surveillance transparency from the US government, allowing the internet, phones and web-based service providers to offer consumers regular safety reports.

“Background information on how the government uses its various investigative authorities has been published for years without any apparent interruption for criminal investigations. We seek permission to make the same information available regarding government-related national security authorities, ”reports a copy of the letter obtained by AllThingsD.

The alliance is made up of 63 different companies, investors, non-profits and professional organizations, all of which will publish a letter asking President Obama and congressional leaders to allow them to report on the following:

The request comes after news of a secret collection program plan, called ‘PRISM’ and leaked in June, in which a number of tech companies, including Apple, were accused of providing the U.S. government with l ” direct access to user data.

Apple later clarified its position through a statement of its “commitment to customer privacy,” denying participation in PRISM and noting that the company exercises a thorough assessment of any law enforcement requests for sensitive data.
