Best of the Year BestyGames 2021: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

After the disappointment that was the game of Avengers released by Square Enix in 2020, it was hard to get excited about the game of Guardians of the Galaxy. Fortunately, there are times when it’s good to be wrong: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy not only is it a good game, but it was one of the best surprises of the year!

The cosmic supergroup of Marvel it was very well represented in theaters, which put the characters in the spotlight around the world. And now, I dare say they’re even better represented, in a game that’s not really an origin story, but that has everything to kick off great cosmic adventures alongside StarLord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon and Groot.

Forget the controversial Game as a Service format, full of repetitive missions and grinding. What we have here is a traditional game, a story with a beginning, middle and enddivided into chapters, which makes room not only to revisit the origins of Peter Quillbut also delivers great moments and even grants the player some freedom to make decisions that affect (a little) the course of the story.

The game’s plot — which involves a beef between the Guardians of the Galaxy and the New Troopbut soon escalates to something much bigger — it makes for the perfect excuse for us to witness the group doing what they do best: getting into trouble, hunting down alien monsters, and interacting with one another.

Group interactions may be what Guardians of the Galaxy have the best: more than a good story, the game has a good text. The conversations that happen at all times between the protagonists are wonderful, and they mix in the right measure the affection they have for each other with great shots and a lot of humor.

In terms of gameplay, I confess that I would like the game to deliver more: we can only control Peter Quill — whose weapons and abilities aren’t particularly interesting — and giving orders to our companions in combat (or to solve some kind of environmental puzzle). It would be nice to be able to perform a combos with the Gamoraor experience the power of Groot. Who knows next?

Fortunately, this isn’t a game about mechanics, but about the friendship and companionship of this very… peculiar group of heroes. The relationships between the characters are at the heart of the game, and that’s where it really shines.. The game goes from comedy to drama very naturally, and offers a very in-depth look at the psyches of the characters, and the reasons they stay together.

Add a top-notch soundtrack — complete with pop rock classics + an entire album by the fictional band Star Lord — amazing graphics and a perfect casting choice, and what we have here is a wonderful surprise: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy It is, yes, one of the best games of the year!
