Activision pulled the refreshed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 out of the hat. No network mode, no cooperation, and as the name suggests – only with the campaign. However, does such a creation have a reason for existence? Get to know my impressions of the history that returns after nearly 11 years.

We heard about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered for the first time in March 2018 – then the production went to Amazon, and after a few days one of the informants mentioned that Activision plans to provide players only with a refreshed campaign. Then we didn’t hear about the game for a year until it was rated by PEGI in March 2019. Since then, we knew that the title was created and the publisher is waiting for the perfect moment to introduce the shooter and invite players to play. Another year has passed by the time of the show, but finally Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered has hit the PlayStation Store and the first players will get to know the long-awaited production. But is it worth it? It all depends on your budget and expectations.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is an exclusively recurring campaign

2020 has started badly, the world is facing a global crisis, but it is a turning point for Activision. At the end of last year, the company ensured another record-breaking Call of Duty, which still conquers sales rankings, launched a free Warzone, which attracted 50 million players in a month, and in addition it serves Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered. The publisher decided not to divide the community interested in online Call of Duty games for the third title (after all, people are playing the new Modern Warfare and Warzone), so the refreshed Modern Warfare 2 contains only campaigns. I have to mention it here, because many players have a big problem with it – here, as the name suggests, you will not receive the multiplayer mode or the Special Ops mission. Maps for online duels are to go to the modern Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but at least currently Activision and Infinity Ward do not reveal details.

With these basic assumptions behind us, we can move on from the latest offer, which debuted with a month’s exclusivity only on PlayStation 4. The price is crucial in this case (PLN 99), because we only get a campaign that you will complete in 5-6 hours, and the biggest fans The series will be swallowed without drinking it in 3-4 hours and basically … At this point you can delete files from the console to save 50GB for another game. The creators encourage you to spend extra hours with the title, enticing you with cups, but it is rather a pleasure only for a very small group of recipients who are chasing next jugs with a smile on their lips. Otherwise, you have to seriously consider whether PLN 99 for 5 hours of fun is a good deal for our wallet … In retrospect, I’m not sure, but it will definitely be a great option at the first better promotion.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is a pleasure for one time …

The story made by Craig Houston in 2009 defends its content after these 11 years. As it is typical to say “old school Call of Duty”, in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 we get a classic story, which lacks more freedom, and the player is kept on a short leash from start to finish, so that too open areas are not made him feel bad and he will want to try something new … And this new one will be much more enjoyable, because I still remember the great action from last year’s Call of Duty and it is surprising that Activision did not decide to release Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered ahead of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot. The reception in this arrangement is a bit disturbed, because in the latest version the script is more decent and more interesting, and the events on the screen are more appealing to me.

This does not mean, however, that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered is not worth reaching for, because the developers of the latest installment took care of an almost complete refreshment of the production. The game not only received a boosted resolution, but the creators found time (after all, they could not complain about the lack of it …) to thoroughly refine the effects and polish many scenes. Years later, the production has gained a new face, and the light falling on the hero’s weapon or spreading over the wet surface makes a great impression – in many places it is not a “simple remaster”, but the work resembles a complete refreshment. From time to time, you will notice the teeth of textures that can still be smoothed, some animations prove that this COD is already old, but in terms of binding – Beenox (authors of the new version) showed great knowledge of the source material and were able to pamper your Activision game. The creators took care of 4K and HDR support, so I recommend that you approach the production on a suitable receiver – only then will you notice a number of effects that the team provided. The studio also did not disappoint in terms of the smoothness of the animation, because the game offers 60 frames, and during the action I could not complain about drops.

The biggest advantage of this refresh is one thing: the creators did not cut the content in the campaign and offer us a full story. These words may sound strange from the perspective of a game that has lost all online content and co-ops, but I was concerned that the developers might make some compromises and remove the iconic “Remember, no Russian”, for example. The mission-legend, through which the production did not return to Russia, still takes a toll on both positive and negative feedback, but I am aware that this stage had a huge impact on the entire series. The story itself has not changed in any way – we still get to know the events from the perspective of several people, and during the operation as Task Force 141 we have the opportunity to pursue Vladimir Makarov, while fighting the Russians attacking the United States. There are still voices that some people find it difficult to catch up with the events, and the action itself jumps too often between locations, but I had a good time again and I do not complain about this perspective.

An important piece of information is also the gameplay element – although the title is already old, you don’t feel it in the shooting itself. The developers managed to fine-tune the feeling of the weapon, and although the experience cannot compare with last year’s title, from the beginning to the end of the story, I did not come across even a single moment during which I would think that I was playing a production created in 2009. It’s a good Call of Duty, with spectacular moments from the “Michael Bay was here” series, and the adventure itself can still shock you (if you haven’t played before), and it is also a good refreshment for loyal fans of the series … But there is still one topic – the price.

Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered worth reaching for?

It is difficult for me to clearly answer the above question, because the developers only provided the campaign. It takes about 5 hours to complete the events, so you basically know exactly what you’re signing up for. Action, explosions, memorable airport and the end – then you can throw the title out of memory and wait for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Remastered. However, is it worth spending PLN 99 on such pleasures? The case is of course very individual. One of them will say “yes” (then add the grade with an “eyelet”), the other will say “little” (then throw off the “eyelet” from the grade), and I stand in the middle and say: I lack encouragement. Beenox only refreshed the game, took care of little Easter Eggs, but they do not add, for example, one or two missions and do not expand our impressions … It’s a pity, because then we could talk a good lure and in this perspective this “stówka” would not be a problem. The game has its moments, you need to get to know this memorable campaign, but now? The best solution may be waiting for the first promotion … However, if you need such a typical “Call of Duty by Michael Bay” – take it, because there is no shortage of it here.
