The title Dead Island may not tell you much yet, but I can tell you that the game seems to be very promising. Of course that remains to be seen, but the trailer arouses a lot of interest. It is not for nothing that it has managed to win awards for the developer. Still, it remains a trailer and of course this doesn’t say anything about what the game will actually look like. In any case, they have sparked interest and the developers are doing everything they can to make Dead Island a success. So far it all sounds great, but what is this game actually about?
Paradise on Earth
Just looking at the title, we can assume that the game will be set on an island. If we combine these two words, we can come to the conclusion that there will be deaths on the island, which we can then translate to zombies. Zombie games are not new and there are already many, but these games are always well received. But first about the story. Dead Island is set on a tropical island called Banoi. The island paints a picture of sun, sea, beach and big parties, in short, a real paradise. Doesn’t sound wrong, until you suddenly wake up and it turns out that all those partying people are suddenly not people but zombies. Suddenly the oh so beautiful party island seems to have been transformed into a true nightmare. Fortunately, you are not alone and you and 3 fellow holidaymakers try to find out what exactly happened and try to get away alive. As you progress a bit you will see that there are still several survivors, for whom you can do missions. And with this, the game seems to become a kind of zombie survival game.
Dead bodies everywhere
Dead Island will be playable in the first person perspective, which means you will be fighting the zombies from the point of view. You can guess that you will see a lot of details if, for example, you edit the zombies with an iron pipe. This all sounds pretty fun, but what’s even more fun is that the island is an open world. So you can go where you want, although this may not be entirely true, because sometimes the zombies will be in abundance, so you will have to go in a different direction. After all, there are only four of you. The great thing about Dead Island is that you can choose in advance which character you will play the game with. All these characters have their pluses and minuses, it’s up to you which one you choose. The other characters will be playable by your friends, which means that the game can be played completely in co-op. So far we know that Dead Island is a first person game, which involves co-op modes. If you thought you knew everything about the game by now, then you’re wrong, because Dead Island will also contain RPG elements. So in the beginning you are just an inexperienced zombie hunter. As you progress through the game you get more skills, you can handle your weapons better and you can use other weapons. This also applies to your fellow survivors. However, weapons remain scarce on an island and you can verify that the ammunition will not be available in abundance. In short, you will also have to be creative with weapons. Of course you can still fight the zombies with your fist, although this is not very wise if you are fighting a large group of zombies.
A first person zombie game with RPG elements and a lot of hack and slash work, that sounds promising. Especially if we can expect about 25 to 30 hours of gameplay, which is a long time these days, since there are also plenty of games that you can finish within 8 hours. Converted 25 to 30 hours of gameplay is about 120 missions, which is still a lot. Whether the missions are very varied remains to be seen. The game is still far from a release so there is still plenty of time to improve. The question is whether Dead Island can compete with a title like Left 4 Dead that is currently very popular. Dead Island is expected in September and will be playable on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
