Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy gives players a fresh look at the iconic Guardians and the behind-the-scenes commentary from Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc, Art Director at Eidos-Montréal, shows that great care has been taken in the design to ensure ensure that each character fits within the wider Marvel universe and the game’s original story.
Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc says: “When designing the Guardians, it was important for the characters to stay true to the story, but at the same time be recognizable as the Guardians of the Galaxy as the fans know them. We’ve combined inspiration from the Marvel comics with the characters’ backstories to create a new look for this fun and dysfunctional family, with each Guardian being given specifically designed aspects that fit within the gameplay.”
Bruno explains that the rock-and-roll space pirate character of the self-proclaimed leader of the Guardians was the inspiration for Star-Lord’s daring appearance. His outfit features Easter eggs alluding to his 80s childhood, including a tribute to his namesake and favorite musicians, the rock band Star-Lord.
Drax the Destroyer’s appearance tells of his extensive combat history, with every scar on his body representing victory. Bruno reveals that the design also references the environment of his home planet Katath, where the architecture uses the same circular shapes as Drax in his scars.
The character design team has created a strong and powerful image for Gamora, the deadliest woman in the galaxy. The inspiration for her striking black and white suit comes from the comics and by adding some deadly embellishments, she is ready for battle at any moment.
Finally, Bruno explains how the relationship between the characters has determined some visual choices. The design of Rocket and Groot is connected to represent their friendship, with Rocket wearing a bead of Groot in his goatee. This composite design contributes to their cooperation during combat. Groot wears armor on his back, allowing Rocket to use him as a shield.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on October 26, 2021 for the PlayStation®5 console, PlayStation 4 console, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, and digital for PC, and as a stream via GeForce NOW.
