Gears of War 3 marks the possible outcome of one of the most important gaming franchises of the current generation. The series’ evolution curve is remarkable over the years: the story became more and more important and the stereotyped brucutus full of catchphrases became more and more human. Gears of War 3 is the culmination of this change, as it is the best and most complete game in the franchise. Excuse the pun, the epic got it: ended the series in an epic way.
The game’s history takes place two years after the end of the second game. THE COG is in tatters and is harassed by the survivors who are scattered around the world. The plans to end the Locusts did not turn out as expected and now both humans and Locusts are devastated, having to live under the shadow of the Lambents, which are Locusts contaminated by the radioactive emulsion that exists in the center of the planet.
the few Gears remaining are housed in the raven, a huge military vessel, when Marcus Fenix receives an unexpected game-changing news for humanity. Gathering new and old companions on one last desperate mission, now it’s all or nothing for the Gears and for the human race.
The feeling of desolation is very present from the first minutes of the game. There is no more hope and even the soldiers who once led the human revolution are on the bottom. Dom, for example, became a pseudo-farmer who cultivates a small garden to ensure the group’s livelihood. Already Anya, who was formerly the communications officer, now wields a lancer and helps in the front line of defense of the raven.
It is interesting to notice the small details that make up this melancholy scenario. NPCs talk about seemingly trivial things, but that translate well to the harsh reality they live. One of them says that he is reading the same book for the ninth time, as there is no longer anything to read. Another scolds a novice for completing the crossword in the paper: copy the diagram onto another sheet so that others can use the original as a template. And it’s like that, mixing a lot of action and intense shootouts with a consistent plot that, from the beginning, Gears of War 3 takes you by the hand and guides you through a beautiful desolate world.
Beautiful? Yes. After the predominance of urban environments of Gears 1 and claustrophobic tunnels of Gears 2, at last we have a more globalized glimpse of the planet It will be. Seas, forests, mountains, ruined cities, beaches, abandoned malls, decaying roads, a Trashball stadium that has been turned into headquarters… the environments of Gears of War 3 are much more varied, all richly built by the skillful hands of Epic Games and yours Unreal Engine.
The graphic quality of the series Gears of War has always stood out and the new game takes another evolutionary leap in this regard: the look of the game as a whole is better and more detailed, with emphasis on facial expressions, textures – including the characters’ skin – and sunlight, which whether entering through cracks and windows or flooding uncovered areas, it illuminates rooms with an extremely photorealistic glow.
The sound continues to maintain the franchise’s characteristic quality, with inspired voiceovers and epic compositions that set the tone for intense moments. Shots, reloads, explosions, chainsaws and enemy roars also remain convincing, especially with a good 5.1 sound system.
It is also worth mentioning the great translation work done by Microsoft: absolutely all dialogues have subtitles in Portuguese, with profanity and everything! The menus and options are also all in Portuguese, and our only caveat is that several things that didn’t need translation were translated: the powerful weapon “hammer of dawn” became the “hammer of the dawn” and the game mode “king of the hill” became “the king of the piece”.
Of course, it’s not just visual and sound to make a good Gears of War and the epic know this. As much as it remains very faithful to previous titles, the gameplay received many new features that make it more dynamic. Times when you must put out fires using fire extinguishers, hang from cables, transport supplies using forklift mechs or control the silverbacks – small battle mechs – are good examples of how gameplay has become more varied in Gears of War 3.
The game’s main campaign – which can last around 15 hours – can now be played online by 4 players, and features a tightly knit narrative that occasionally allows us to see things from the point of view of other characters. Striving to enhance the personality of their creations, epic managed to make of Gears 3 an almost emotional experience for fans. To see Paste “Train” Visiting the Trashball stadium locker room where he was once a star is an exhilarating experience for anyone familiar with this universe and its characters. Of course whenever it gets too sweet, we can count on the buck Baird and his sarcastic sense of humor to break the seriousness.
On this new journey through It will be, you Gears you will encounter different types of enemies, including Lambents, Locusts and other hideous hybrids. We have old acquaintances such as corpsers, tickers and boomers, but there is room for the introduction of several new creatures, as deadly as the already managed.
To finish off all these guys, Marcus Fenix and his troupe have an arsenal full of new weapons: in addition to the traditional Lancer with a chainsaw bayonet, we now also have the Retro Lancer, which has a harpoon tip. Saw-barreled shotguns, sword-sized machetes, incendiary grenades, a huge sniper rifle that kills anything with just one shot… new options abound to make the killing more varied.
After venturing through the main campaign, it’s time to call friends to face the various multiplayer game modes, another point that has always stood out in the franchise Gears of War. Several classic game modes are back enhanced with new maps, but the highlight goes to the challenging mode. Horde – which is now almost a tower defense – and the Beast, which is basically a Horde on the contrary.
playing in mode Horde, you can spread different types of traps to stop or slow down the advance of enemies. Your results in each wave guarantee money that must be spent to buy weapons and obstacles for the next stage. already in the mode Beast you take control of the Locusts and must infiltrate the base of the humans, who get better guarded with each round. The cool thing is that over time you unlock all kinds of Locusts: Want to be a big boomer? Beauty! Prefer to be one of the annoying explosive tickers? No problem!
If the epic it brought back everything that was already good in multiplayer, it also kept something that was bad: the difficulty of finding matches online. The automatic search system takes a long time to find matches, which is quite frustrating. It’s usually easier to “invite yourself” into a friend’s game (or create a group to play with you) than waiting for the automatic search find a random match. It’s hard to understand why the epic kept this lame automatic search, since in Gears 1 the system was manual and worked perfectly.
Gears of War 3 it’s everything fans of the series had hoped for: bigger and better. THE epic knows how to combine a good story with high doses of action and violence, all with neat visuals, refined gameplay and many new features. The main problem here is: will we have a Gears of War 4 to kill the longing for Marcus, Baird, Cole, Anya and why not) Jack?
