The flagship console series with a green logo is back, and it’s in a big way. The brand passed from hand to hand is currently in the pantry of The Coalition, formerly known as Black Tusk. The team responsible for Gears Of War: Ultimate edition has proved that not only the remaster can do it properly. The fourth installment has everything that solid Gears need.
Developers of Gears Of War 4 used the wealth of the universe carefully built in the previous parts. We have it all here: flashbacks of past battles explaining past events, retired heroes who must once again help save the world, seemingly eliminated threat. The new part is simply a tribute to the series and its fans. In addition, we have new heroes, an interesting story and a level of gameplay.
Gears Of War 4 takes place on the planet Sera, 25 years after the events of Gears Of War 3. The wars have led to a dramatic change in weather conditions manifested by deadly electric storms. Climate change has forced residents to build fortresses that will be able to protect them from the angry mother nature. In the game we play the famous son at the turn of the series, Marcus Feniks. JD Feniks and his two companies – Kait Diaz and Delmond “Dela” Walker, will face the deadly threat in a streamlined, but nonetheless old style. The atmosphere of the new Gears has slightly eased up. The colors are modeled on the third installment of the title, and new heroes throw funny texts every now and then. Fortunately, it fits perfectly with the story presented to us. Of course, the game is still “heavy” and atmospheric – it can be dark, but most of all, bloody.
The mechanics of the game do not differ significantly from the scheme known from the series. The Cover-System is still the basis, enriched with the ability to tear enemies from behind covers and eliminate them with a knife. We can mostly associate the range of weapons with their predecessors, so fans of saws suspended under a rifle have nothing to worry about. There were also a pair of unprecedented poppers. An example of this can be a weapon that throws blades that bounce off the walls, quartering opponents, or a minigun torn from a flying drone. The variety of opponents stands out against the background of well-known gameplay elements. For about half of the game, we will have to fight robots straight from Terminator: Salvation. We have a whole spectrum of them – from human-like attitudes to heavily armored ones to flying and turlatable-exploding ones. It should be remembered that after the oil is dropped from the machines, we will have to spill the slurry from various kinds of monsters – and there are also many of these. Each type and type of enemy has a different fighting style, so we have to modify our strategy and weapon selection on an ongoing basis. This provides a lot of variety to a seemingly monotonous gameplay. It is also worth mentioning the artificial intelligence that can surprise people used to its today’s standards. Hiding behind the curtain, the elite enemy units can easily pull us out from behind the curtain and give us a blade, ending our life. By adding sequences that completely diversify the game, such as driving a motorcycle or driving a building-sized titan, you just can’t get bored. Paradoxically, despite all these novelties, it can still be said that they are simply good gears. We are also happy about the solid end of the production with an open path to continuation, thus not leaving the player with more questions than answers.
For fans of online struggles, the game offers clashes in arenas with other users, a horde mode in which we fight successively waves of advancing enemies and a cooperative campaign, which, fortunately, can also be completed “on the couch”. The novelties did not omit the multiplayer mode, because now we have a fabricator at our disposal in clashes with hordes of enemies. This device will allow us to build various types of fortifications, from slowing down enemies to offensive cannons. It is also possible to customize the character depending on which mode and on which side of the conflict we are to play.
Gears Of War 4 does not disappoint on any level. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 so it looks and sounds great. The story is interesting, and the old veterans will not only get a solid portion of well-known Gears, but also taste all kinds of well-implemented and implemented novelties. Of course, it could always be better, because despite pumping ******** into the four, there is no significant innovation that would pierce the ceiling with the bar. Nevertheless, the attractiveness of the carefully prepared XONE and now PC exclusives cannot be denied.
