Appearance of the Huawei P Smart 2019

The Huawei P Smart 2019 has a high-gloss, black housing (midnight black) made of plastic, on which the words Huawei and AI camera with the built-in dual rear camera can be seen horizontally. Furthermore, the fingerprint sensor is located in the middle on the back. Unfortunately, the glossy surface also attracts fingerprints. The smartphone lies comfortably in the hand, but should be used with a protective cover, otherwise it scratches very quickly.

The dewdrop design is visible on the display when viewed from above. A tiny, teardrop-shaped notch at the top center of the screen. This only contains the front camera of the smartphone.

In the top view on the right there are the on / off button and the volume rocker. The port for micro-USB and 3.5 jack cable are located at the lower edge. The SIM card slot is located at the top of the screen.

Operating system of the Huawei P Smart 2019

The Huawei P Smart 2019 is delivered with the current Android 9.0 Pie. Furthermore, the Huawei surface EMUI 9.0 is on board. The security patch is from November 1st, 2018.

Setting up the Huawei P Smart 2019

You log in with your Google account and your WiFi password. You can then start setting up straight away. Either you transfer data from an old smartphone from the cloud, or you set up the smartphone from scratch. There is also an automatic search for updates. Next you have the possibility to create a Huawei ID to access the Huawei Cloud, the Gallery, Designs, Video, Music and the option “Find phone” from Huawei. Then it goes to the device protection by setting up the fingerprint ID, face unlock and a password. A six-digit PIN is also required for each screen protection. Improved EMUI services can now be accessed by activating either all services or just individual services. It is also possible to decline the improved service. You can also take part in a program to improve user-friendliness.

It continues with apps suggested by Huawei, which you can install. Some of the apps are already pre-marked, so they would be installed directly. If you don’t want that, just remove the check mark.

Display of the Huawei P Smart 2019

The display of the Huawei P Smart 2019 measures 6.2 inches in screen diagonal. Due to the 19.5: 9 format, it takes up almost the entire front surface. The picture is razor-sharp thanks to the FullHD Plus resolution (2340×1080 pixels) and a pixel density of 415 ppi. The Huawei P Smart 2019 also scores with natural colors. The screen resolution can still be reduced manually in the smartphone settings.

A waterdrop notch, which contains the front camera, can be found in the middle of the upper edge of the display. To the left of the notch are the indicators for WLAN and notifications. The battery display and the time are on the right. The notch can also be changed from Custom Standard to Hide Notch in the settings under the “Display” option. The upper areas of the display are blackened so that the notch itself is hardly noticeable.

Settings / functions of the Huawei P Smart 2019

All normal functions such as wireless & networks, tones, display and others can be found in the settings of the Huawei P Smart 2019. Various images can be downloaded from the start screen and background and used as a background. There are also preset background designs, which can then be adjusted by the user.

Another option in the settings is Digital Balance, which monitors the time on the smartphone and creates user statistics. Here you can also determine whether it is your own smartphone or that of your child. With Digital Balance you set a daily screen time, app limits and specify when the screen turns off because of your bedtime.

Under Security and data protection, you will find the Google Play Protect check, specify whether you want to use the “Find my device” option and whether location access is granted for it. The current security update, which was in our test from November 1, 2018, is also displayed here.

The HiSuite HDB option can also be enabled under Security, which allows your smartphone to be connected to the PC without activating USB debugging.

With the Smart Assist option, there are accessibility aids such as TalkBack, Read Aloud, Text-to-Speech, Mono Audio, and Captions. The color of the display can also be corrected here, magnification gestures and a large mouse pointer can be used, or fonts can be displayed with high contrast. This means that users with motor, acoustic and visual restrictions can also use the smartphone.

Another possibility of intelligent support is HiTouch, a kind of Google Lens. This means that with HiTouch you have the option of smart shopping by scanning objects in your area and HiTouch then shows you the right one from the Internet.

There is also motion control, which you can use to mute the phone by turning it around, to reduce the volume by picking it up, for example, or to activate the smartphone. Furthermore, a screenshot can be created by swiping across the display from top to bottom with three fingers.

You can also customize the navigation buttons of the Huawei P Smart 2019. You can use the usual back button, home button and app overview button, gesture control or a Navi-Dot.

The Huawei also includes a screen recorder to record all actions on the screen and share them with others.

Making calls / loudspeakers of the Huawei P Smart 2019

The sound and the understanding when telephoning were without any abnormalities. The call quality is normal and good.

Only a mono speaker is installed here for music playback, which plays the music but sounds more like a camping radio. The loudspeaker sounds tinny at high volume. You won’t find a bass either.

Camera of the Huawei P Smart 2019

When you open the camera for the first time, you will be asked whether it is allowed to save information about your location for pictures and videos and thus provide your pictures with location data.

You will then find the shutter release button for the camera at the bottom of the screen, the switch button for the front camera to the right and the button for the gallery on the left. The camera of the Huawei P Smart 2019 offers the different modes:

  • cover
  • night
  • portrait
  • photo
  • Video
  • More with the options Filter, Light Painting Pro, Sticker, HDR, Panorama, Time Lapse and AR Lens

In the camera’s settings you specify how the resolution should be, whether a GPS tag should be inserted, the camera grid should be activated, a game function should be used on the front camera, a silent activation of the camera, timer, audio control, automatic capture when a smile is detected (works great) and an ultra snapshot that lets you take a picture by pressing the volume down button twice when the screen is off.

Stickers on various topics can be added to the created images. The current weather (with location access) can be brought onto the picture, or sayings about food, sports and love.

With the light painting option, “painted” images are created through the movements of the person being photographed on the basis of several shots. This worked rather poorly than well in the test. You could see light movements, but these were not as recognizable in the light or dark background, regardless of whether with or without flash, as shown in the example image.

The quality of the images is okay for normal users during the day. In the dark or in poor lighting conditions, there is noise and blurring. All videos created with the Huawei P Smart 2019 are saved in full HD resolution.

Battery of the Huawei P Smart 2019

A 3400 mAh battery is built into the Huawei P Smart 2019. This has a running time of approx. 14 hours, depending on the use. However, the lack of wireless charging is a shame here.

Conclusion of the Huawei P Smart 2019

The Huawei P Smart 2019 is a well-built, stylish-looking smartphone. It has a large display with good battery life and the current Android 9.0 Pie operating system. In my opinion, it is a pity that a new device in this price range is only delivered with an outdated MicroUSB connection and no QI charging option. The camera itself is fine, but it can’t compete with top of the range models. The performance is not exactly the fastest either, so there is always a slight delay when you tap the display.

The Huawei P Smart 2019 is currently available from Idealo from a price of 229.39 euros. As soon as the price drops, the smartphone is an ideal opportunity as an entry-level smartphone.
