Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – game review. In preparation for the Olympics

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – game review. In preparation for the Olympics

Only next year Tokyo will be the capital of the Summer Olympics, but now SEGA invites players to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The game, prepared exclusively for Nintendo Switch, is overloaded with competition, although paradoxically lacks the appropriate content.

Nintendo continues its exclusive run by offering Nintendo Switch owners another very strong exclusive productions. After a nice Luigi’s Mansion 3, and before Pokemon Sword / Shield, it’s time to check out Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. SEGA invites players to a series of mini-games that will amuse and awaken meetings with friends. However, you will soon feel that something is missing here.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – something good for everyone

The latest meeting between Mario and Sonic’s team is related to next year’s Summer Olympics. This time the bands include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Bowser, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Bowser Jr. and Sonic, Knuckles Tails, Amy, Shadow, Dr. Eggman, Silver, Metal Sonic, Blaze or Vector. In both teams, we can also get guests who will perform in competitions selected by the developers – for example Rouge is great at sport climbing, and Rosalina is great at surfing. Two lineups look good in the modern variant of the game, but the creators also prepared a series of events from 1964, in which we can check Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach and Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Dr. Eggman. This may look strange on paper, but it works in the wash, because players simply get even more content. It’s hard to complain about this, as it has to do with the story mode in some way. However, the campaign was not properly prepared – in the story itself, the heroes are drawn into the retro console, which results in an opportunity to participate in a stylized game. The idea is good, but its implementation is terrible, because instead of quick fights and a pleasant story – the developers serve us a ton of dialogues that are difficult to survive without a strong black. The creators literally tire with the sluggish pace of action, and when we add the fact that the competition often lasts 10 times shorter than the introduction itself, it is difficult to talk about a successful game. The awards themselves are also not impressive, because apart from the heroes mentioned, we also have the opportunity to unlock mini-games, the level of which, however, is not high enough for me to say – it’s worth playing.

The events themselves, which can impress with the gameplay, fare much better, and in fact their number is really satisfying. In the 2020 Olympics, we have access to 24 competitions, while during Tokyo in 1964, we will check 10 competitions. This gives us the number of 34 challenges, among which it is not difficult to find great rivalries, but of course, as is usually the case in such games – some will like running, others will love archery, and another smile will not disappear from their faces, for example while swimming. At the same time, I have the impression that the creators managed to maintain a very equal level of all competition, because during the game I did not come across even one event that would completely reject me. On the other hand, I found a dozen to which I returned with great pleasure. The game has one more big advantage – gameplay is usually based on a maximum of five or six buttons, and in extreme situations we have to use up to two. Thanks to this, a really wide audience can get to know the production – from the youngest to the oldest. It is for this reason that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 carries out its main task – it is a very pleasant party game. Up to four players can have fun with one console, but be warned: in several competitions, even splitting the Nintendo Switch’s small screen into two makes some commands less visible. It is much better when playing with friends to connect the console to a larger receiver. This does not mean, of course, that the Nintendo hybrid does not work in its natural environment – in the field – but in this case some competitions are better than others.

The list of events from 2020 includes: 100 meter run, triple jump, skatebording, rugby, badminton, 110 meter hurdles, discus throw, boxing, double kayak, table tennis, 4×100 m run, sport climbing, karate, swimming, fencing, javelin throwing, surfing, football, gymnastics, archery, horse riding and three special events: skateboarding, target shooting and karate in a special arena. In the case of the competition from 1964, we have the opportunity to check: 100 meters run, tower jumping, judo, 400 m steeplechase, box jump, volleyball, long jump, kayaking, shooting and marathon.

The gameplay is very enjoyable in the case of clashes with AI – there are three difficulty levels – but weariness appears quite quickly. The situation is much better when a friend sits next to it, grabs the controller and the real fight begins. In this situation, the fun goes to a much higher level – no one verifies the bot records anymore, and the most important thing is to kick your buddy. I wanted to mention the best events here, but honestly? It is not easy, because each competition works well in its structure – fast action and easy mastery of the game make all sports disciplines at least good. Nevertheless, during the last house party, we most often tried gymnastics (at the right moment you should click the designated buttons or make an analog movement), sports climbing (we place the characters’ hands and click), archery (typical fun with paying attention to distance and wind strength), badminton (the difficulty is on the right click to hit the dart), jump into the water from the tower (choose a combination and have to perform it as soon as possible) or shooting at targets (at the right moment you have to click on the designated field). I did not come across any challenges that would discourage me completely or their rules were incomprehensible – the rules of the game are clear.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – something is missing, however

Many events are excellent, but in fact, after the first few hours, there is one thing missing in this thicket of competition – the possibility of competing with a friend at the appropriate level. Currently, we can only invite a friend to a “quick match” who lacks the appropriate development – the option to choose several professions, counting points, rankings? Not this time. It is for this reason that even the most interesting disciplines become boring at some point, because we do not have the opportunity to fight for the proverbial brewery.

A similar lack of idea also appears in network mode. The game allows us to test our skills against players from around the world, but instead of decent matchmaking based on a few selected competitions – we can only choose one competition. It means waiting too long for the fun, because when we just want to practice in boxing, other players may besiege, for example, karate. The situation is not solved by the possibility of setting up a lobby or browsing the created rooms, because even using these options, we can never be sure that someone will want to check the competition we have designated.

Even before choosing heroes and starting the fight for medals, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 allows you to choose one of four gameplay styles – double controllers and a single controller (in both situations we use Joy-Cony and gyroscopic aiming) or button-focused competition ( we can share Joy-Conami). Regardless of the adopted pattern of fun – the game really does not disappoint, and matching the game to one pad makes even fun on one Joy-Con not tiring. The creators also allow you to increase the fun by using several consoles, but in fact, this is where all the prepared attractions end.

The setting itself is definitely noteworthy as it is pleasing to the eye – regardless of the year of events. A curiosity is certainly the fact that when deciding on the Olympics in 1964, the heroes were prepared in their retro versions: the Mario team is 8-bit characters, and the Sonic team is 16-bit characters.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – dobry party-game ale …

Mario and Sonic’s latest struggles don’t fail at first. The competitions are very enjoyable, their number is sufficient, but in the end, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 lacks the proper use of the modes. The creators also did not fully rethink the campaign and matchmaking to the network mode. To sum up: although the basics are good, they lack expansion with the right variants of the game. The game will definitely work during lazy Sundays, when the autumn weather will make you want to leave the house … Just remember about a sheet of paper to manually write down the results and create your home league.
