About two weeks after the big E3 2018 event, we’re still getting some details on games we saw there. And it seems that The Last of Us Part II it is the most recent game to have new details.
This time, the long-awaited sequel will reportedly feature more than one playable characteras stated by the co-design director, Emilia Schatz, in an interview.
Ellie might not be the only one we control
Schatz, who has been working at Naughty Dog since 2010 on games like Uncharted 3, The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, has sat down with a French game store to talk about The Last of Us Part II gameplay shown at E3 2018 and other development-related topics of the game.
During the interview, Schatz said:
Well, at this point, we’re just set to show off Ellie as a playable character. This could change in the future, but we’re not really ready to talk about it yet, so I think there’s still a lot about the game that hasn’t been revealed.
Despite this comment (which came in response to the question of how reducing the number of playable characters to one will affect the sequel’s gameplay) it has not been explicitly confirmed that there will be more than one playable character. Schatz has only indirectly implied that Ellie won’t be the only character we can control.
The team’s statements contradict each other
This collides directly with the statements of other members of the development team. In a post during E3 2018, Creative Director Neil Druckmann flatly said that “Ellie is the only playable character in the game.” Perhaps The Last of Us Part II takes a similar approach to the first installment, where we control Joel for most of the adventure, but at some point we have to put ourselves in Ellie’s shoes.
We will be attentive to future statements that can better clarify the matter of the playable characters… or that confuse us more. In the meantime, you can discover other interesting details about the combat, the AI or the gameplay. In addition, it has also been confirmed that there will be a multiplayer mode.
The Last of Us Part II will be available for PlayStation 4 on a date not yet confirmed.
