Everyone knows that the work that Insomniac Games is doing with the new Spider-Man title is magnificent. The possibilities that today’s computers and consoles provide with open world games mean that Spider-Man has its doors open.
But looking back, it is by no means the first game based on the famous Marvel comic series. Stopping to think about the subject, I remembered that one of the games that I remember best about them is, precisely, the original PlayStation Spider-Man, which was released in the first year of the millennium we are experiencing. It was under the protection of the veteran Activisión and the now closed Neversoft.
Given the resources of the current era, it is clear that in terms of possibilities the title that is yet to come will be tremendously superior, but remembering everything that title from the year 2000 offered us, this one is unbeatable. Although it is a humble opinion of the person who writes these lines, I will try to convince you why I think so.
Main story and characters
The story that this game tells is inspired by the superhero of the 90s, although today we would probably think that the style is too direct. Things happen fast and sometimes it doesn’t seem to make much sense. This seems to be more suitable for certain contemporary titles that, despite the fact that the plot could be very good, extending the game for many hours could suppose too great an economic effort.
In this title we begin by seeing how a fake Spider-Man steals a new technological prodigy from Dr. Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus), discrediting the image of the superhero. The main conflict will be, in the first hours of the game, with the New York police.
Little by little, the different characters and villains that will appear in the current Spider-Man are shown, but despite not being a concise list, that title brought together many well-known Marvel villains: Daredevil, Black Cat (your guide during the game ), Rhino, Dr. Octopus, Venom, Scorpion, The Human Torch, Mysterio (whose fight I remember especially epic), The Punisher, Carnage, Captain America… An enviable cast that although some are merely cameos, the vast majority contributed their bit of sand in the main story.
Spider-Man and the open world
Despite the fact that in the 2000s creating an open world Spider-Man game was unthinkable, they tried to do something tremendously ambitious: Spider-Man had a certain freedom to move around the world and especially through the scenarios, being able to reach any point in the world. himself and plan different strategies. With such a character, some limitation in this regard would have been rare.
Although the game was a full-fledged hack and slash, we could improve Spider-Man’s abilities, as well as change his suit (unlocked by beating the game or through cheats) that gave the character different abilities.
All these elements, together with the relative “short duration”, were perfect for those of us who enjoyed the game in its day, we did it perfectly a dozen times. At least!
As you can see in the images, any comparison with the current Spider-Man is really absurd, but it seems wonderful to me how they used different resources that now seem simple to solve the problems that arose due to technical limitations. In this case, the story tells that two mysterious villains spread a mist throughout the city that, later, will be the one that attracts the symbiotes that gave us so much war. An example of how a story element was able to save the game developers from a possible pinch: this fog was used to cover distant buildings that, for obvious reasons, could not be shown on screen.

The game, as you can imagine, was full of details. One of those that I did not remember and that when reading about this game again is that the main narrator of the title is Stan Lee himself. Details like this now make you smile that you probably didn’t before (I was a bit small when I played it and ignored those details).
The sense of humor is present throughout the development of the story, and the graphics engine it used was the same as that of Tony Hawks 2. Although this title also came to N64, Sega Dreamcast and PC, only the PlayStation version made the most of the title, having pre-rendered action scenes that looked spectacular at the time. For this reason, it is mainly remembered as a title of this platform.
And finally, a nice coincidence: August 30 of this year marks exactly 18 years since its launch on PlayStation. Congratulations!

Looking back, it is obvious that much of these lines are written with nostalgia. I only wish that the title that comes from Insomniac Games exclusively for PS4 lives up to our expectations and surprises us again as they did that day.
