The gaming world has in rumors a great source of discussion. Through situations, leaks, statements or whatever, it is more than common, in any video game vehicle, you find news, articles and materials based on “rumors”. But what, in the midst of all this, became reality, through some announcement or release? And what was just a rumor?
To observe this scenario, and see if the rumors are, in fact, elements that can be turned into good news for game fans, I decided to revisit articles from the BestyGames, of several years, and observe the direction these rumors have taken. News about 2020 rumors will not be considered, due to the lack of time to materialize (or not) the ideas. And let’s just talk about rumors reported by BestyGames. Come on?
Forza Street on Nintendo Switch? Until now, nothing!
In May 2019, it was aired that an exclusive franchise of Microsoft would reach a console of Nintendo. Fruit of friendship between Microsoft and Nintendo, which tells the promise of expansion of the Xbox Live to Switch, it was speculated that Forza would gain a mobile version, and that the console from Big N would be contemplated. force, in fact gained a mobile version, but for iOS and Android. It’s the Switch, until now, nothing.
New Nintendo Switch? They got it right!
In 2019, rumors began to air about a new Nintendo Switch. Portable, websites and media channels were speculating about a cheaper version, which would only have portable functionality, without a Dock, or the possibility of connecting to a TV. And, in fact, the Nintendo Switch Lite was released, and it sold very well.
Breaking Bad Game? Launched!
breaking bad is one of the most acclaimed series of all time. And, the clamor for a game would be natural. In 2019, the series that has Walter White as the protagonist won a rumor of an empire building game. And the game, in fact, was released. Not being a version for AAA consoles as many people would like, the BB game puts the player, in a free mobile game, in command of the empire (and kitchen) of Walter White.
New Bioshock? It’s in the oven.
In 2018, a “secret studio” would be producing a new Bioshock. The rumor, that if it were true, would be the joy of many fans, who have followed orphans of the franchise since Infinite, in 2011, became true a year later. THE 2K confirmed a new game in the series, but at the hands of another studio, since the irrational games, in Ken Levine. The “secret studio” is called Cloud Chamber, a team formed by members of two studios. But so far, there is no further information about the game.
Assassin’s Creed in Egypt? Yes, Origins has arrived.
Assassin’s Creed is champion in the matter of rumor. “Ragnarok” is slated for 2020, and the Viking-themed game, Valhalla, will arrive, in fact, at the end of the year. But going back to 2016, when the community around the game was still very critical of the series, for the Syndicate, there was a rumor that the series would take a sabbatical year, only to return in 2017. With history going on in Ancient Egypt, there would still be room to add the Roman Empire, in a kind of trilogy.
In fact, Assassin’s Creed Origins was released in 2017, and Ancient Egypt was the chosen setting. But ancient Rome only appeared in parts of the game. The next game, Odyssey, would take place in Greece, years before. AND Valhalla, with a Viking theme, takes place in the 7th century.
Kojima out of Konami? Yes, look at Kojima Productions there.
The rumors of the departure of Hideo Kojima gives Konami, at the time of the development of Metal Gear Solid V, were rather obvious. They were supported by the removal of the series creator’s name from the game. Which would be a pretty weird sign, given the developer’s taste for “putting your name on pretty much everything in your games.” the episode involving PT it also reinforced the idea of developer exit.
In 2015, in fact, Kojima left the Konami, and founded the Kojima Productions. And promised a new game for Playstation. such a game would be Death Stranding, which divided opinions, and brings a totally complex story, but which attracts, until today, those interested in interpreting it, and getting to know it better.
Xbox: Discless console and Game Pass Ultimate hit
THE Microsoft, in 2019, announced bold new plans for the current generation, but already focused on the next one. In April, rumors began to surface about a version of Xbox One S no disc player, made just for playing digital games. Furthermore, another rumor said that the Microsoft would offer an option to unify the Game Pass with the Xbox Live.
Both rumors turned out to be real. THE Microsoft actually launched the All Digital Edition, the version of Xbox One S without disc player, and launched the Ultimate Game Pass, plan that encompasses its two services: o Game Pass it’s the Xbox Live, in one package.
Robert Downey Jr. as Leonardo da Vinci in Assassin’s Creed? Not!
O Iron Man in a movie Assassin’s Creed? A rumor said this, in 2014. Robert Downey Jr., that lived Tony Stark in theaters, in addition to being successful in other films, and it has an incredible overcoming story, it was mentioned, via rumor, that an inventor would live again. This time it would be Leonardo da Vinci in the movie of Assassin’s Creed. Making reference, of course, to the second game of the series, which takes place in the Renaissance era, and has the participation of the important, and controversial, artist and inventor.
But in the end, the movie, starring Michael Fassbender, ended up going to the side of the Spanish Inquisition. A little away from the old Italian peninsula, home to da vinci. In 2017, the year the feature premiered, Downey Jr. would live Tony Stark once again in Spider-Man: Back Home.
Can Microsoft buy the creator of Minecraft? Bought and for a hefty sum!
Minecraft moving to the Microsoft? In 2014, rumors in this regard were raised. At the time, the Mojang, which was already a success with the game, was the target of rumors, which raised the fact that the Microsoft would be talking, negotiating a purchase, and offering two billion dollars for the game.
This actually happened. But the purchase was not two billion, but two and a half billion dollars. THE Microsoft truly believed in the project of Minecraft, and today, in addition to profiting from the game’s consistently high sales, it still invests in education, with several initiatives focused on educational institutions.
Could Google buy Twitch for $1 billion? Who bought it was Amazon.
“Family sources” said in 2014 that the Google would be interested in buying the Twitch, and offered 1 billion dollars in the proposal. But, in the end, who opened the wallet was the Amazon. The value, of US$ 970 million, was a little lower than the Google could have offered. But it was enough for the trillion-dollar giant to acquire the streaming service, and has continued to keep the platform online ever since.
CJ in GTA V? It’s a lie…
GTA V takes place in Los Santos. And, obviously, a lot of people wanted the presence of the most beloved character in the franchise Grand Theft Auto at all times: CJ. Statements by the actor who dubbed Franklin on the fifth GTA left in the air the possibility of a DLC with CJ in the game. But, what would be a very welcome news for the fans, it was only in the rumor.
As we know, the rockstar never showed much interest in reusing characters in games GTA, except quotes in games from the same universe (such as games from the 128-bit era), or occasional appearances in games, in this same universe. And it was also very clear that the investments of rockstar in GTA V it was online, this terrain that makes the rockstar following in the lead, almost for the entire current generation, in sales of its game.
3DS with Playstation 3 processor? Where did you get that from?
In 2010, when the Nintendo 3DS he still didn’t have all the news presented, rumors fed him. And one of them, somewhat absurd, both for the time and for the work style of the Nintendo. It was said that the 3DS could have the same processing power as the Playstation 3. Very strange, knowing that the Nintendo never put cutting edge technology in their consoles, much less in the notebook.
Of course this was all speculation. Despite having native 3D technology on the console (which almost no one used), its specs were much more limited. Your graphics chip, for example, the PICA200, already had four years of life and was chosen for its cost-effectiveness. The console, in the end, despite offering very good games, did not come close to the current generation. Being closer to the Playstation 2, which even suffered to run a version of Metal Gear Solid 3.
Rumors: always saying “what the people want to hear”
The rumor gained traction in the media as a whole. In the gaming world, such information is always based on what “people want to hear”. After all, who wouldn’t want to hear news about their favorite games? Based on this, generally, rumors come in two forms: by information gathered by insiders in the industry, who leak something, or by pure speculation.
There are also those who believe that companies themselves provide specific information, seeking to feel public opinion in relation to the novelty. And there have also been cases where a person has spent over 900 dollars to plant false rumors about Fallout 4. Goal? “Touching the terror”.
Rumors will always be reported by the media. Even though it is not an absolute truth, they usually involve games and productions which generate a lot of attention, which naturally yields more hits in the news. But whether it’s true or not, it says: do you follow these rumors? Do you believe in them, for the most part, or for you, are they all created “just to generate clicks on sites”?
