For days the specialized press has been very focused on the different information that has been leaking about a new Samsung terminal. Shortly after the presentation of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the lack of a premium touch on the device began to be criticized, while the first rumors appeared that the Koreans could be working on it. Finally, without too much publicity (we have already dealt with this in the press), the Samsung Galaxy Alpha has made an appearance and the truth is that it has not left anyone indifferent.
As a summary, we find a terminal that It would be in the low part of the high range. 4.7-inch screen at 720p resolution, an 8-core Exynos 5430 processor, 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 and the much talked about 1860mAh battery. Without a doubt, they are not the best specifications on the market today, but we do not know the real intentions of the company for this terminal either.
In any case, whatever segment you want to place it in, there are truths like fists, and this terminal, in general, has left us very cold. To begin with, the premium course that has been focused mainly on thickness. Yes, it is true that the metal edge has been added, but really It is not a “metallic” terminal, far from it. It is also true that there are people who like Korean designs, but looking at the rest of the companies, the normal thing would be apply major updates and redesigns and not follow a line almost the same as that of the original Samsung Galaxy S in absolutely all devices.
And with this I’m not saying that aluminum is the solution, far from it. In fact, it has been commented many times that the design that HTC uses should be the standard, but that is not the case and we can verify it with other companies that have decided to use, for example, tempered glass. What really mattered here was being able to keep the thickness to a minimum to be able to compete with the iPhone and that we must recognize that they have achieved.
In recent years we have seen how Samsung has been losing its market share point by point and like other brands they have taken away a little of all its success. It is still true that the company’s terminals continue to be sold with surprising numbers, although valuing it a little, we would say that it is more by their own inertia, not because they are better than the competition. Samsung has been stuck in the past, it feeds back with each new terminal and no longer has that advantage over the rest, he has lost it and has done nothing to prevent it.
Again, when everyone expected a somewhat better designed equivalent of the Samsung Galaxy S5, we find a practically the same terminal with some metallic edges and somewhat incongruous benefits in some points. Is it a high-end, mid-range, premium, normal terminal? The truth is that it is difficult to locate a phone of this type, although its price answers many questions. If the rumors are confirmed, we will have to pay nothing more and nothing less than 600 euros for him.
On the other hand, in a terminal of this price we would expect to find a screen that looks really good. I am not saying that 720p is a bad resolution, but it is true that having the first terminals with QHD screens, it is rare to have a terminal with such a “simple” panel. And I must insist that for that price it would almost be mandatory that it be, at least, like the Samsung Galaxy S5.
And finally, if there is something that really surprises, this is the battery. 1,860 mAh is all the energy with which we supposedly have to reach the end of the day, something that after making the first reviews it is said that it is not possible. From the company it has been said that the cause of this low figure has been the search for a terminal as fine as possible and compete with the iPhone, although it will force users to always have a charger nearby.
On the other hand, we have the processor. The Exynos 5430 is the first to be built on 20nm for mobile terminals and initially should provide a 25% savings compared to competitors such as the 28nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 805. this and what works at a much lower resolution than the maximum it supports They would be, together with the big.LITTLE technology, the three main saving methods of the newly arrived processor.
Samsung’s first explanations somewhat justify the surprising specifications of the terminal. It has sought to create a terminal to be able to compete with the iPhone without having to resort to huge screens or great thicknesses. This has been achieved, but Things as important as a good battery have been left behind along the way. We will have to see the performance and autonomy that it is capable of offering, since the Exynos 5430 brings interesting news in this regard. However, as far as design is concerned, Samsung has not achieved a truly premium terminal, but it has simply modified minimally what we are already accustomed to seeing.
Undoubtedly, the last and most important opinion is held by the users, so we will have to wait to see the reception that the device has. What do you think about it? Does Samsung comply with what was expected or is it simply a test to see its acceptance?
