STRANGE ENCOUNTERS AT THE DANCE
I leave behind, to tell the truth quite perplexed, the principal and that strange collaborator of his and I walk into the hall of the garden along the stairs that lead to the elevator, I go up and reach the area, in front of my classroom, in which other SeeDs who have taken the exam like me are waiting for the results. Here I find myself in front of a small number of anxiously waiting boys, I do not see Seifer, but on the other hand there are his two trusted minions Raijin and Fujin who warn me, almost intimidating me, that in case Seifer does not pass the exam they will find me guilty.
I don’t quite understand what the mechanics behind this reasoning are, but I’m not in the mood to pay them attention, I’m already nervous enough and the incessant and neurotic going up and down the corridor of Zell only sharpens my nervousness. Then one of the Garden overseers finally appears. Time seems to stand still as he calls first Zell’s name and then mine. I don’t have time to know who else has passed the exam and I am immediately summoned to the principal Cid room for a speech dedicated to those who passed the exam. I don’t see Seifer… Then it really happened.
Principal Cid: “Congratulations to everyone. But remember, from today on SeeD diets and you will be sent on missions around the world. SeeD is the code name for the warriors Balamb Garden is proud of. SeeDs are combat specialists, but this is only one aspect of the SeeD’s mission. When the time comes … “
The principal’s speech is interrupted again by one of the Garden teachers who reminds him that it is almost time for the “meeting” and invites him to conclude briefly.
The teacher takes out the diploma and certificate of our SeeD rank which the principal gives us one by one, whispering something in our ear. I can distinctly hear the principal’s invitation to Zell to be less impulsive, then he comes to me and handing me the diploma he says “You are the Gunblade specialist”, as if to confirm Seifer’s rejection.
Principal Cid: “And with that the ceremony is over. Break the lines. “
I leave the room with the other SeeDs who have passed the exam and once out of the elevator we run into Seifer, backed as always by Fujin and Raijin.
He applauds… He’s applauding us! And so do Fujin, Raijin and the other students who did not pass the final exam. Unexpected, I don’t know how else to describe this moment.
I move away from the group to spend some time with my thoughts walking around the Garden. Finally alone, how I like to be and how in the last few hours I could not be due to force majeure. I’ve never been a guy used to socializing, much less making friends; now how will things go …? Walking through the various areas of the Garden I hardly even realize the time that passes and it is already dark when I finally decide to go back to my room where, to my surprise, I find Selphie waiting for me. SeeD uniform that until a few hours before I had only seen Professor Quistis, invites me to put on mine and to go to the party organized to celebrate the new SeeD generation of the Garden of Balamb.
I put on my uniform and go with Selphie to the ballroom where the festivities are taking place. There are many people having fun, people I take care to approach and soon I find myself in a corner of the room where there is less confusion. A column to lean on and, sipping a drink, kindly take me to one of the waitresses who serve in the room, admire such sumptuousness. My little corner of quiet soon ends, however, to vanish into thin air when I hear the thunderous voice of Zell in the distance, but then closer and closer to my ear.
Zell: “Hey Squall! From today we are SeeD! Come on, here your hand! “
I look at him with an air of siffucius and continue to sip my drink …
Zell: “You will also be SeeD, but you are always the same! Your way of doing it gets on my nerves. “
I was about to tell him that it was mutual, but luckily my new “friend” walked away before I had time to answer him.
I continue to remain in my little corner of peace, leaning against my faithful column when, scanning the starry sky, I find myself following a shooting star that furrows the celestial vault with my eyes. Then, looking back over the room, I find myself meeting that of a girl I don’t think I’ve ever seen before in Garden. Not that I care about the people around me, but she still doesn’t look like a student, much less a SeeD. She suddenly turns to me and with a look full of curiosity she approaches me with quick steps.
I keep looking at her curiously as she approaches me and the first words she addresses to me even leave me perplexed.
“Do you know that you are the cutest?”
A compliment? But who is this girl? I remain silent.
“Let’s Dance? Or do you only dance with the girls you like? “
I continue to remain silent, partly out of distrust, partly because such an approach has totally stunned me, then in the end I manage to make her understand that I don’t know how to dance, but I get yet another unexpected response.
“It’s easy. I need someone for the prom. I can’t dance alone! “
And so saying he drags me, literally, on the dance floor, pulling me by the arm.
It’s true, I’m not able to dance, but not at all, it was not a simple excuse to avoid it and, according to the damage we did on the dance floor, she too will certainly be convinced that it was not a lie. We continue to “dance” for a few minutes, until the fireworks above our head catch our attention and then something, or someone, off the floor, catches her attention, making her move away quickly and leaving me there , confused like never before.
