Tenant: Sony makes a loss on every PS5 Digital Edition
Analyst Michael Pachter has said that Sony is not doing a good business with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console. According to him, the cheaper variant is loss-making for Sony. Via the Gamingbolt he says that Sony has ruined it for itself with that version.
I think they screwed up with that version. The cost of a PS5 is $450, so they break even with the $500 version, but lose $40 on a Digital version. A disc drive is not worth that much. So they lose $40 per unit, but gain $6 again per digital game they sell. So you have to buy quite a few games to make up for that. I don’t think players are going to buy a lot of games now. I think many gamers just want a disc drive to save their games and trade with friends. In the long run, I think Sony will sell a lot less digital editions.
