The prices of smartphones, tablets and storage units will increase in 2014

Some parliamentarians of the PD presented at the last minute an addition to the stability law before the rectification of the Chamber to increase private copying fees for the SIAE. This is the so-called “Fair compensation” and that is the tax that is applied to the final price of each digital (or analog) multimedia support sold on the Italian territory.

Simply put, Fair Compensation should represent copyright compensation for any content that is duplicated and archived on a new medium. In short, the SIAE, with the excuse that all users download illegal material from the network which is then saved on storage media, charge a fee to all Italians on such media to compensate for these illegal downloads.

The increase on the final price varies from product to product. As for the less capacious memories and smartphones, the increase is only € 0.90. As for the memories of more than 250GB integrated in a multimedia device, the increase is € 30 (for a 160GB iPod classic it is € 16) while the multimedia hard drives on the market today will have an increase of € 50.

Here is what is added to the law of stability:

The € 1 increase on smartphones is not a serious thing, but as far as storage devices are concerned, the increase is substantial, leading users to buy their products abroad.
