Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, recently revealed that all Xbox Series X games that will be released before the end of 2021 will also be available on the current generation. According to the American giant, this is a pro-consumer action, thanks to which players who decide to buy the Xbox One this year will not be pushed to the sidelines after the debut of the new generation.
On the one hand, the idea seems reasonable, because such a policy is intended to make as many players happy as possible, but is it not at the expense of the disappointed expectations of some of them? Microsoft released the eighth generation console in 2013, and seven years is almost an eternity in the gaming industry. Players are already hungry for a graphical revolution, and this will be difficult to expect from titles that will have to run smoothly on equipment that is two classes weaker. Exclusive games have been a determinant of the highest quality and technological standards for years and this is unlikely to change in the ninth generation.
Ninja Theory is one of the companies adopted by MS. Hellblade 2 Senua’s Saga is to be available for the premiere of the new Xbox.
Over the past two years, Microsoft has bought out many talented development companies, from which players expected a strong entry into the new generation. Unfortunately, the announcement of a long cross-gene support raises doubts about a strong start. Americans like to flex their muscles in advertising slogans, often mentioning the most powerful gaming console, but players would like to know how this strongman carries real weights, and this is not expected to happen until 2022.
Sony has a completely different approach. It is mainly thanks to the exclusive titles that the Japanese won the eighth generation. In part, this also applies to the Nintendo Switch, although in the case of the big “N” platform, the matter is more complicated, and there are many more components of success.
Jason Schreier in the Kotaku podcast in December emphasized that the titles prepared by Sony for the premiere of the new console are unlikely to be released on PlayStation 4. Of course, the current generation will not be suddenly abandoned by the developers, but support for it, as in the case of PlayStation 3, will concern titles multi-platform. It is not surprising Sony. Players expect a lot from the new console, and the real power and the highest quality are usually shown by titles created for specific equipment, which automatically translates into its sales.
Microsoft has recently provided the owners of its platform with a lot of good. It started with backward compatibility, and then with great services like EA Access and the sensational Xbox Games Pass that gave gamers access to a library of great titles for little money. However, each year there are several great games, including new IPs that Microsoft subscribers will never have the opportunity to play. These are, of course, exclusive titles for Sony and Nintendo platforms. It seems that if Microsoft wants to count in the fight that will start at the end of 2020, it must offer players full-fledged exclusive titles, because they mean that Sony will make two more big premieres before the debut of PlayStation 5 and sell several million PlayStation 4. without having to press it to players for half the price.
